Birds’ wings clipped by Cricket Australia

Posted by Moses on February 24, 2009 under NSW | Be the First to Comment

NSWales fast bowler and Aaron Bird has failed the bendy test and been sentenced to a 90 day ban by Cricket Australia.

Bird was reported three times by umpires this year, however laboratory testing found just one of his deliveries breached the malleable murali metric of 15 degrees.

As the top wicket taker in both T20 and F50 competitions, he’ll be missed by the Blues in their remaining two Shield matches and also for the final when we make it. His 90 day ban concludes on 26th May 2009, which would have been an interesting test for the IPL had any franchise bid for him.

Upon completing his 90 day exclusion from competition Aaron will have to undergo biometric testing, where he’ll bowl all his deliveries except his wonky one, I believe the word for it is Doosra.

A Mathematical Chance

Posted by Moses on February 23, 2009 under NSW, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC, WA | 9 Comments to Read

That innings loss to the Mexican’s is but a small hickup on the road to our 46th Sheffield Shield.

First, lets have a look at the table with two rounds to go. Sure sitting in 5th place on 16 points is not ideal, and with Tassie sitting pretty on 24 and our not getting a chance to play them, we’re banking a lot on an implosion of note on the apple isle.

Obviously NSWales will get outright victories from our remaining two matches, finishing our regular season on 28 points. Here’s the events beyond our control that also needs to fall into place for us to retain our title:

  • Tassie to gain at most 4 points from VIC and SA. This would force a tie, however we’d likely make it through on equal outright victories (4) and a better quotient.

  • QLD to not beat VIC outright
  • WA to get 0 points from our match

Then we’ll meet the VICs at the MCG for the Final where they’ll choke as is their custom. Easy As.

Fixtures

Thu 26 – Sun 1 Tasmania v Victoria, Hobart
Thu 26 – Sun 1 Queensland v New South Wales, Brisbane
Thu 26 – Sun 1 Western Australia v South Australia, WACA
Thu 5 – Sun 8 New South Wales v Western Australia, SCG
Thu 5 – Sun 8 South Australia v Tasmania, Adelaide
Thu 5 – Sun 8 Victoria v Queensland, MCG

NSW to rally towards 46th Sheffield Shield

Posted by Moses on February 2, 2009 under NSW, QLD, VIC, WA | 4 Comments to Read

It’s not too late for the mighty NSW Blues to defend their Sheffield Shield, and considering we’ve won 1, lost 3 and drawn 2 matches it’ll have to be one hell of a late rally for us to contest the finals.

We’re currently sitting in 5th place out of the 6 teams. At this stage, I’d book the MCG out as Victoria are a certainty to top the table. They’re sitting pretty on 30 points and have a big gap to the next placed Queensland with 3 matches to go. To improve our chances I’ll be hoping for as many Victorian wins to keep them ahead of the field.

There’s 4 matches remaining:

  • Fri 30 – Mon 2 Feb vs Tasmania in Newcastle
  • Sun 15 – Wed 18 Feb vs Victoria in Melbourne
  • Thu 26 – Sun 1 Mar vs Queensland in Brisbane
  • Thu 5 – Sun 8 Mar vs WA in Sydney

and of the matches on this weekend, QLD lost to Western Australia but picked up first innings points, Victoria should beat South Australia, and NSW should beat TAS outright for 6 points, which will leave the table 7/10ths of the way through the comp looking like:

  • Victoria 36
  • Queensland 22
  • New South Wales 18
  • Western Australia 18
  • Tasmania 18
  • South Australia 8

The real challenge for NSW, as always, will be when our Test stars depart for the South Africa tour. There is a 3 day game against South Africa A on February 20th, and I’m guessing that safety first Cricket Australia wont let those selected play the shield match against Victoria that finishes on the 18th.

Phillip Hughes is now looking a certainty for his Baggy Green, along with Simon Katich, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin. Hopefully we can hold onto Phil Jaques, Dave Warner (to get his First Class debut), Nathan Hauritz and Nathan Bracken at least until the One Day squad is sent over for the 27th March. We’ll also be carefully monitoring Stuart Clark’s elbow and Brett Lee’s ankle – their return could well be the deciding factor in this years shield.

Our young blokes will have to step up against the nearer full strength Victorian, Queensland and Western Australian outfits, and if they do we’ll be looking good for another finals appearance. And then, just maybe we can lift the trophy for the 46th time of the 106 times it’s being contested.

Ford Ranger Cup Coverage Delayed

Man Hair

Man Hair

Bloody Hell, we lost to the Redbacks! Surely even NSW F should be able to whip the whipping boys, but Shaun Tait with 5/27 says No. Mind you, Shaun Tait also says he should go to India due to his impressive record against them (21 overs, 1 maiden, 0/92 in Perth) and his proven ability to reverse swing the white ball implying he’ll find the magic with the SG Ball that the incumbent Baggy Green bowlers and their coach one Troy Cooley have thus far failed to. Life must be just peachy in Shaun’s Head.

Now I’m not going to make excuses for the loss, by all accounts Tait was devastating with the ball, and it’s not like losing our top 27 players to an India tour and another to a debilitating man-hair injury has adversely effected us.

As long as NSW continue to breed the big names we should pull through this season, and if we can find a way to make the finals then get our big guns back we’ll probably win the Shield, again.

Chris Rogers in it for the cash

Posted by Moses on October 15, 2008 under NSW, VIC, WA | 2 Comments to Read

Chris Rogers Sheffield Shield coverage at Beer and Sport will be postponed until the commencement of the NSW Bluetongues’ campaign.

So onto more distracting issues, like John Rogers. John is a simple man, and like many of his generation has strong values of honesty, integrity, and dignity. John believes in one club for life. This was made somewhat easier for John as he wasn’t very good and only played 4 first class matches, but true to his ethics they were all for his beloved New South Wales.

It pains John to recall the tale of his son Chris , who holds the rare blemish as the only Australian ever to hit a double century against Australia. It was Chris Rogers demorilising of Lee, Gillespie, Kasprowicz and Macgill that started the 2005 rot that led into a ODI loss to Bangladesh and concluded with the poms in an open topped bus.

The anguish that poor John suffers when regailing the career of his foreyed ranga slut of a son Chris is unbearable. Here is a one club for life man who’s son has so far graced the rosters of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Shropshire, Western Australia, Victoria, and Australia.

In April Chris walked out on his contract with Western Australia, a curious move considering he’d just cracked the national setup, and one must ask as to the motivation for this move. The official line from camp Rogers was his frustration at being ommited from WA’s One Day squad. He had offers from Queensland, South Australia and Victoria, and to understand where Chris Rogers’ priorities lay, the benefits of playing each state have to be examined.

Queensland would have been a disaster for Rogers. His gingah hair and fair complexion would have been no match for the harsh Gabba sun.

South Australia on paper offered the best package. It was rumoured he’d get the captaincy, they are completely and utterly shithouse in the batting department so he’d be worshipped by all 7 SACA members, plus the Adelaide Zoo offers free entry to Rangas, themselves an endagered species according to Zoos SA’s director of conservation programs Kevin Evans.

Finally there was Victoria, and this could prove to be the final nail in his loyal fathers coffin, a man who’s life has been spent fostering a hatred of those damn mexicans with mobiles.

The plusses would be playing in the countries second best state side, not having to face Dirk Nannes, and inclusion in the shortened format of the game. But when it came time to talk turkey, none of these things mattered.

Chris is 31 years old, mostly blind, and wholly red haired. Peroxide and laser eye surgery are not cheap so he’d gone to the Mexicans, and here is why: Victoria are playing in the world T20 club championship. This is in India. The IPL is in India. $$$$$$$$$$$

FSOB and no Eyelids

Posted by jrod on October 9, 2008 under VIC | 2 Comments to Read

FSOB and no Eyelids

Eyelids has a dud groin, and you know who we have to blame for this, Notts.

They made him, and then they broke him.

And what do we have left Gerard White.

Not good enough.

I want Eyelids goddammit.

I have watched him destroy Notts all year, and now, just as he is to do the same for us he is no where to be seen.

Someone fix his groin please.

In other news Victoria is still splitting the difference on the keepers. The X man was good enough for last years final, but Wade is back.

I do hope Wade keeps better than last year, because that was freakin horrible.

And in even other news.

Who is Jon Holland?

Being that the info I have on him is that he is a left arm orthodox spinner, I’d have to say he is the son of Bob Holland.

It’s not true, but it has wonderful symmetry.

He shall be called F(ake)SOB for the time being.

I know he plays for Carlton.

That he was picked because McGain is injured and White is living a surreal moment.

And on wikipedia it tells me “He is an Australian cricketer who played in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka where he was a very good bowler.”

He looks like he will make his debut in both forms of the game next week, although its hardly a baptism of fire against the redonkbacks.

And in even otherer news the future PM David Hussey is to skipper, which is a good thing, cause I thought it might be the Ego of Hodge.

The squads are…

Victorian squads:

Ford Ranger Cup: David Hussey (capt), Aiden Blizzard, Adam Crosthwaite, Shane Harwood, Brad Hodge, Jon Holland, Andrew McDonald, Clinton McKay, Dirk Nannes, Robert Quiney, Chris Rogers, Damien Wright.

Sheffield Shield: David Hussey (capt), Shane Harwood, Brad Hodge, Jon Holland, Nick Jewell, Andrew McDonald, Clinton McKay, Dirk Nannes, Robert Quiney, Chris Rogers, Damien Wright, Matthew Wade. (12th men to be named).

the Sheffield Shield, brought to you by a soggy breakfast: WA

Posted by jrod on October 5, 2008 under WA | Read the First Comment

Western Australia, the test match batsman

Players that wont be available for large chunks of the season

Mitchell Johnson, Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh.

They won’t miss Johnson because they have never had him, but when they have him it will be handy.

Hussey and Marsh are not going to be missed in a batting line up of this strength.

Leadership

Marcus North is very strong captain, and with Cameron White is the best captain in Australia.

Voges is the Vice Captain, and he was at one time a potential Australian captain.

So it’s a pretty good base they have there, Chris Rogers left because of a lack of leadership oppurtunities and he captained Derbyshire this year.

Bowling

Hard to see where the wickets are going to come from.

Magoffin is a wicket taker, Edmondson is proper quick, and Dorey is tall.

But you can’t see them getting 20 wickets too often.

Aaron Heal is a great one day spinner, but isn’t really a four day bowler, and I can’t see anyone else in their squad who can contribute wickets.

Batting

This is where Western Australia come into their own.

Pomersbach, Voges, and North are all test match quality batsman in lesser countries.

Liam davis made a hundred on debut against NSWales last year and Luke ronchi is a freakin superstar.

Long in the tooth

Matthew Innes took a lot of wickets last year, but he was retired, so um, no one really.

Ready to lose the nappies

Geoff, Shaun, and now Mitchell. The third in the line of Marshs, he is only young, and is rookie listed, but with Rogers and Langer leaving he may be a good fit for the top order.

Nostradamus

Shield

3rd or 4th.

One day

2nd or 3rd.

2020

3rd or 4th.

The rub

Can bat the ass off a polar bear, but can they take wickets.

Victoria, the home of the brave

Players that wont be available due to committments in a lesser team

McGain, Hussey and White.

McGain won’t play one dayers, and other 2 won’t play tests, so they should have the majority of their team the majority of the time.

Along with Tasmania, has the best balanced lists, and made the finals of all three trophies last year for one Victory, would want to take one of the more important sides this year.

Leadership

This is the big test, this is the big bears team, and when the one dayers come around and he is busy, they will be looking forsome else to take over.

Brad Hodge will probably get the job, dammit, but I think Nick Jewell could be the man.

Bowling

Dirty Dirk Nannes, Eyelids Pattinson, Peter Siddle (Sizzle), Wright and probably Clint McKay are the quicks, and all genuine wicket takers.

Eyelids has come back to Australia as a legit first class bowler, and this is a pretty handy bunch of 5 bowlers.

Spin bowling is interesting, with McGain out, White is the only spinner I know of close to first class level, but young Kumar Sarna may get a go.

If White has to take the job as number one spinner, it may do him good to get th extra overs, but Victoria will miss Bryce.

Batting

The Middle order is still sexy, Hodge, Hussey and White, but they won’t have that for 6 weeks.

Chris Rogers has been brought in, as Victoria struggle to ever have two good openers at one time.

Last year it looked like Jewell had come of age, so if he and Rogers can provide solid starts, other states may be in all sorts of trouble.

Victoria do need to pick a keeper this year, either young Wade gets a go, or the X man continues.

Long in the tooth

There is no obvious players on the way out, Hodge and McGain being the oldest, but they are probably around for fair while yet. Damien Wright may not finish the season however.

Ready to shed the nappies

James Pattinson, brother of Eyelids, is supposedly a freak of nature, and I say get him in there at 7 before Notts try and claim him.

Nostradamus

Shield

1st or 2nd.

One day

2nd or 3rd.

2020

1st or 2nd.

The rub

If they can overcome the loss of Bryce they could win it all.

Tassie, the butler’s men

Players that wont be available for large chunks of the season

Ponting, sorry he should have been in the NSWales side, and maybe Krezja and Geeves.

Krezja and Geeves won’t miss many games this year, so Tasmania should be at full strength for most of the year.

Tasmania are at that great point where they have a great team, but they haven’t lost many players to the national team.

Should be hard to beat in all forms of the game.

Leadership

Daniel Marsh is in charge again, this could be his last year, so he will want to go out on top.

Can captain this chubby man.

Bowling

Geeves, Drew and Hilfenhaus are three young quick bowlers. Throw in Denton, if he is fit and it’s a great fast bowling line up.

Their spin is more than handy too, Krezja, Doherty and Marsh are all wicket takers as well.

A very well balanced attack, 20 wickets should come often.

Batting

Dighton, Bailey, Birt, And Paine are the backbone of the DiVenutoless batting line up.

Very workmanlike, but the batting sets up the games for their bowlers.

Paine and Bailey will need to step up this year and become superstars to handle the better attacks.

Long in the tooth

Everyone loves Daniel Marsh, but this will be the rotund fellas last year, Bailey will take over mid season or next season.

Ready to shed the nappies

Luke Butterworth was one I talked up last year, and he hardly played. This year he will play and dominate, I hope.

Nostradamus

Shield

1st or 2nd.

One day

1st.

2020

1st or 2nd.

The rub

Should be at the top, but couldn’t take wickets last year.
