Smilin’ George to captain the Tigers

Posted by jrod on May 29, 2009 under TAS | Be the First to Comment

With Dan Marsh’s axing decision to step down as captain (Even though I wrote he was retiring, it appears he is to play on) Tasmania have given the top job to George Bailey.

It is the obvious choice, mostly because there seems to be no other alternatives.

It will be interesting to see how George goes in the top role, he seems like a tricky little guy, and he is stepping into a tough bastard’s shoes.

Tasmania had to make changes after a shithouse performance last year.

It does mean this is a good time for Bailey to take over, as he probably can’t get the team to perform any worse than they did last year.

Watching him being interviewed in the IPL a few times he struck me as a fairly clever cricketer, even if he did run himself out the only two times he batted in the tournament.

He does have one massive plus as a captain, the media will find it hard to turn on someone who is always smiling.

His deputy is going to be Tim Paine, and this does worry me a bit.

For the benefit of Australian cricket I just want Tim Paine to make runs and take catches consistently, and I hope the Vice Captaincy isn’t a distraction to him.

The problem with Bailey and Paine has always been consistency; neither of them has had a bend the shield over kind of season yet.

Perhaps this will make both of them better cricketers, but captaining the Tigers is probably the hardest job in shield cricket, as Tasmania don’t have any major football or rugby teams to vent their frustration on.

I wish them well, not well enough that they beat the Vics, but well.

Chubbs fires as tigers choke

Posted by jrod on March 8, 2009 under SA, TAS | Read the First Comment

Tasmania were left with a pretty simple objective, win match, play final.

With the Vics killing New Texas, Tassie had fate in their hands.

They dropped it.

After the first innings was complete, Tasmania found themselves about 50 in front, not a massive lead, but handy in the situation.

They had bowled South Australia out for 253, so when they went on to make 289 and set the redbacks 338, that should have been enough for them to win.

It wasn’t, South Australia made it look pretty easy, only losing 5 wickets and having 15 overs in the bank.

Mark Cosgrove was the difference, his comeback has been the happiest time in his life since he played for Australia and got free KFC.

2 hundreds in 3 matches, and he has now proves that fatty boom bah or not, the man I s first class batsman of some skill.

The redbacks finish the season 3rd, and considering how bad they have been, it is a great result.  This is also the firs time they have won 3 games on the trot in 15 years, which tells you how shit they have been.

Tasmania finish it 4th, and should be spanked by hairy men for the next 6 months.

How a team with this much talent has finished 4th is beyond me, although to be fair, Western Australia has finished 6th, so talent had less to do with this years results than desire and team harmony.

Tim Paine has not come along, which must burn Tasmania with Matthew Wade the most inform batsman of all keepers in the country.

Luke Butterworth is finally back in the side, but is not the allrounder everyone thought he would be.

George Bailey has still never had a huge season, and you have to ask if he ever will.

From the 06/07 side only Geeves and Hilfenhaus have gone onto higher honours.

They just have that air of underperformance about them, and with Dan Marsh 83 years old, they would want some of these people to stand up next year, or they will really struggle.

Eyelid’s stars as Victoria collapse

Posted by jrod on February 28, 2009 under TAS, VIC | Be the First to Comment

You may remember him from;

Victorian second XI
Dandenong
Nottinghamshire
England

But now Eyelids Pattinson has reclaimed his rightful occasional spot for Victoria.

And he has 5 wickets to prove it.

5 for 38 off 22 to be exact, as he ripped the heart out of Tasmania.

A Tasmania, it must be and is being said, that was 2/223 and strolling along.

The Smiling George Bailey made 130 not out, and something called Wells made 98.

After Eyelid’s 5 wickets, Victoria found themselves 235 up, then they returned back to form.

A breathtaking collapse of 5/59, leaving them best part of 300 up with a day to go.

The Vics still have White, Wade and Hastings to go.

But you’ve got to admit, they know how to throw a collapse.

The search for a Baggy Green Pinch Hitter starts here

Travis Birt, Unlucky

Travis Birt, Unlucky

Now that I’ve dropped Cameron White and David Hussey, the search has begun for a new number 6 and 7 in the Aussie ODI squad. I’ve taken a look at the scorecards from our Domestic F50 competition and compiled a list of all the batting performances where more than 20 are scored at greater than a run a ball. The most recent performances are listed first.

Birt, TR 86(66), 94(80), 67(56), 25(15)
Smith, DLR 29*(13), 28*(26)
Manou, GA 48* (39)
Warner 31(20), 97(54), 165*(112)
MG Dighton 59(58), 87(76)
Klinger 133*(128)
Ferguson, C 52(35), 32(26), 101(83)
Hopes J 76(61), 42(40)
Bailey, GJ 32(28)
Divin, MA 38(31)
Ronchi, L 80(64)
AK, Heal 43(34)
Quiney 42(40), 16(15), 92(85), 73(63)
Crosthwaite, AJ 52(49), 29(17)
Thornely, DJ 108(90)
Doropoulos, TP 92(75)
Henriques, MC 41(37)
Borgas, CJ 39(35)

I’ve quite possibly missed some, if anyone can point me towards a tool that pulls out domestic data rather than having to manually read the scorecards, that would be most appreciated.

Looking purely at the numbers, the standout domestic performers are:

Travis Birt from Tasmania

Travis is the form pinch hitter in the domestic T50 competition with his 7 innings yielding 363 runs at 60.5 and at a strike rate of 122! His returns this year are:

  • 1/11/08 56*(37) vs SA
  • 12/11/08 25(15) vs Vic
  • 29/11/08 34(38) vs NSW (the game where Warner scored 165*(112)
  • 07/12/08 67(56) vs NSW
  • 10/12/08 94(80) vs SA
  • 14/12/08 1(5) vs QLD
  • 07/02/08 86(66) vs VIC (this low scoring game Tas made 197 and VIC made 189)

David Warner from NSW

Dave has already been given a shot in the national setup with promising signs but too many failures. From his 8 starts there have been 3 good innings, yielding 89(43) on debut, 69(60) in his 4th match, and 22(29) in his 6th match when he was very unlucky to be run-out.

Combine these scores with Dave’s domestic highlights of 31(20), 97(54), 165*(112) and it’s easy to agree he has the destructive power hitting would really dominate the batting powerplay without the additional pressure of opening. I’d like to see Dave given a go down the order, where he’ll have a chance to perform without the added pressure of opening.

Callum Ferguson from South Australia

His stand out performances include 52(35), 32(26) and 101(83). It’s good to see him given a shot in the Aussie side, though I would have picked Birt first purely on the numbers. Callum played well last night before a Bucknor howler cut short his opportunity. Who did the BCCI ask to wipe him from their fixtures, and can we please be added to this list?

James Hopes from Queensland

In the two games that Hopes played for Queensland he’s opened in both, scoring 76(61) and 42(40). I’d like to see him given an extended run at the top of our order, his tight straight bowling will keep him in the squad regardless. Ideally we’d have a run of 2 or maybe even 3 ODI’s without changing our openers, wouldn’t that be nice.

Adam Voges from Western Australia

Conversely, Adam Voges has made the squad without topping a run a ball all year. Now he’s the one our selectors have picked to apply ‘pressure’ to Hussey and White, yet even if he were to continue his domestic results at the higher lever I don’t believe this would be enough. His 295 runs at 49.2 certainly doesn’t constitute bad numbers, but his strike rate of just 70.2 is not get our 300+ mojo back.

  • 8/10/08 13(35) vs NSW

  • 24/10/08 56(78) vs Tas
  • 16/11/08 104(119) vs SA
  • 26/11/08 39(72) vs VIC
  • 20/12/08 78(108) vs VIC
  • 23/12/08 5(8) vs NSW

If we were after a reliable batsman then Simon Katich would have to be the first picked, selecting Voges in this form to me makes little sense.

Welcome to FPM’s playground

Australia’s Hussey may have lost all semblance of form.

But Victoria’s is still simmering along nicely.

While hundreds have been very hard for him to grab in 4 day cricket.

Apparently all the extra time is what has been bugging him.

15 overs is all it took him, and Xavier Stutter Ball Doherty may never be the same again.

100 off 47 balls.

He even did a double act, following up with the ball as well.

Actually a triple act, 2 wickets as well.

I propose the Big Bash be renamed in the man’s honour, The Future PM’s playground.

The man doesn’t man handle 2020 attacks, he cuts them down, he is like a 2020 spartan.

It’s as if the white ball has slept with his missus.

He is one huge part of why Victoria are the number one ranked domestic 2020 side in the world.

The other is the bearded barbarian Dirty Dirk.

Michael Dighton is a white ball run machine.

Dirty Dirk cleans up that mess in the first over.

George Bailey seems to live to fuck with Victorian bowlers.

DD wipes that cheeky smile off his face as well.

Game over.

That is one hell of a double punch.

At least we know in this crazy world that somethings stay the same, Victoria have the mad skillz in 2020 cricket.

Vics choke Tassie, George smiles relentlessly

Posted by jrod on November 15, 2008 under TAS, VIC | Read the First Comment

The Vics choked Tasmania without two of their main weapons.

Dirty Dirk and Eyelids were out, but Andrew McDonald stepped in with a 3 for to leave Tasmania 8 for 189 at the close.

George Bailey does his best work against us, I think all that Mick Lewis sledging early in his career really fired him up for a career of G scoring.

Luckily his 70 odd was the only score on the day.

Now that the Vics are home, this must be the 6 point game, first innings points are really starting to shit me.

Even more than the Australian saying that Klinger could be a chance to play for Australia and that his output has been Bradmanesque.

Funny twist wit the game to, starting it 2 hours late because all the players were flying back from the chicken promo game.

And Victoria caught a break because David Hussey’s batting gear didn’t arrive at all.

When I worked at Qantas that would have never have happened.

the Sheffield Shield, brought to you by a soggy breakfast: TAS

Posted by jrod on October 2, 2008 under TAS | 3 Comments to Read

Tassie, the butler’s men

Players that wont be available for large chunks of the season

Ponting, sorry he should have been in the NSWales side, and maybe Krezja and Geeves.

Krezja and Geeves won’t miss many games this year, so Tasmania should be at full strength for most of the year.

Tasmania are at that great point where they have a great team, but they haven’t lost many players to the national team.

Should be hard to beat in all forms of the game.

Leadership

Daniel Marsh is in charge again, this could be his last year, so he will want to go out on top.

Can captain this chubby man.

Bowling

Geeves, Drew and Hilfenhaus are three young quick bowlers. Throw in Denton, if he is fit and it’s a great fast bowling line up.

Their spin is more than handy too, Krezja, Doherty and Marsh are all wicket takers as well.

A very well balanced attack, 20 wickets should come often.

Batting

Dighton, Bailey, Birt, And Paine are the backbone of the DiVenutoless batting line up.

Very workmanlike, but the batting sets up the games for their bowlers.

Paine and Bailey will need to step up this year and become superstars to handle the better attacks.

Long in the tooth

Everyone loves Daniel Marsh, but this will be the rotund fellas last year, Bailey will take over mid season or next season.

Ready to shed the nappies

Luke Butterworth was one I talked up last year, and he hardly played. This year he will play and dominate, I hope.

Nostradamus

Shield

1st or 2nd.

One day

1st.

2020

1st or 2nd.

The rub

Should be at the top, but couldn’t take wickets last year.

The Phillip Seymour Hoffman team

gallant

Posted by jrod on February 18, 2008 under VIC | 2 Comments to Read

Victoria held on for a gallant draw today.

I’m not sure what a gallant draw is, but that’s exactly what they managed.

Mark Cameron and Beau Casson, absolute champions of world cricket, just scraped together 18 wickets between them.

Which is a great sign for Victoria as Cameron may not even get a Guernsey for the final.

Beau Casson took 7 wickets in the match, which probably makes him favourite for the Pakistan tour.

Lets look at what this drawn game means for Victoria.

They are now guaranteed a spot in the final. Woohoo.

Cameron White almost made back to back 50’s. Not bad.

CWB’s Nice Bryce took 5 wickets, and if he had a bit more time could have made a real mess to the NSWales tail. Conjecture.

We still have Harwood, Denton and Nannes to come back. Hopefully.

McDonald continued his resurgence from injury, taking wickets and making runs. Shane who?

Hodge and Hussey continued to be Hodge and Hussey, which is a good and bad thing. Nothing new.

Now let us forget the weird NSWales selections, their obvious cheating to get Hussey out of the side, and the fact two nobodies bowled us out on their own and look forward to taking on the Tasmanians in the Holden Barina cup.

George Bailey beware.
